Can you remove a criminal record from a background check?

Often, yes. What can be removed depends on where the record appears. A profile on a people-search site like BeenVerified, Spokeo, TruthFinder, Intelius, or AdvancedBackgroundChecks can usually be removed through that site’s opt-out process. A record on an employment or tenant screening report is governed by the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA), and outdated, sealed, or inaccurate entries can be disputed and corrected. The official court record itself stays with the court unless it is expunged or sealed.

Key facts about background check removal

  • People-search sites are not the same as screening companies. Most people-search sites say they are not consumer reporting agencies and offer an opt-out. Screening companies that employers and landlords use are regulated by the FCRA.
  • Arrests that didn’t lead to a conviction have a 7-year limit. Under the FCRA, screening companies generally can’t report non-conviction arrest records older than seven years (jobs paying $75,000 or more are an exception). Some states set stricter limits.
  • Convictions are treated differently. Federal law doesn’t put a time limit on reporting convictions, so expungement or sealing is often the path to getting one off a screening report.
  • Disputes have deadlines. A screening company generally has 30 days to investigate a dispute, and up to 45 days if you send more information during the review.
  • Opt-outs don’t clear Google. Removing a profile from a site doesn’t remove the old result from Google or Bing. That’s a separate step, and we handle it.
  • Your data spreads. Background check sites share and resell data, so one record usually appears on dozens of sites. We find and remove every copy we can, not just the one you noticed.

Two kinds of background checks, two different removal paths

Most people searching for “background check removal” are dealing with one or both of these. We work on both.

1. People-search and “instant background check” websites

Sites like BeenVerified, Spokeo, TruthFinder, Instant Checkmate, Intelius, MyLife, Radaris, and AdvancedBackgroundChecks compile public records, arrest data, addresses, phone numbers, relatives, and social profiles into a profile anyone can search. Removal here means opting out of each site, often with separate requests for every name variation and address, and then clearing the results from Google.

2. Employment and tenant screening reports

When an employer or landlord runs a formal background check, they use a consumer reporting agency covered by the FCRA. These reports aren’t public web pages, so the fix is different: identify the outdated, sealed, expunged, or inaccurate entry and dispute it with the screening company, backed by the right court paperwork.

Why a background check listing hurts, even if the case was dismissed

A background check profile tells the worst version of your story with none of the context. Arrests show up next to your current address, often without the outcome.

Jobs and promotions

Hiring managers and recruiters Google candidates. An arrest record or mugshot on a background check site can end the conversation before you explain that the charge was dropped.

Housing and loans

Landlords and property managers check applicants online and through tenant screening. An old record can cost you an apartment you’re otherwise qualified for.

Your safety and privacy

These profiles list your address, phone number, relatives, and past addresses, which makes it easy for anyone to find you or your family.

AI answers repeat it

AI search tools and chatbots pull from people-search sites. If the record is online, an AI summary of your name can repeat it as fact.

How to remove background check results from Google

Google doesn’t remove a background check profile just because the site deleted it. The old title and snippet, with your name in it, can stay in search results for weeks. Here’s how we clear it:

  1. Remove the source first. We get the profile or record removed from each background check site, so the page no longer shows your information.
  2. File outdated-content requests. We use Google’s and Bing’s removal tools for every removed URL so the cached title and snippet are dropped.
  3. Use Google’s personal information policy. Where a result shows your home address, phone number, or other contact details, Google’s “Results about you” process can remove it from search even if the site won’t act.
  4. Verify by name search. We search your name, city, and variations the way an employer would and confirm the results are gone.

Which background check records are easiest to remove?

We tell you up front what’s realistic.

LikelihoodTypical situations
Strong candidatesPeople-search profiles (addresses, phone numbers, relatives), mugshots and booking photos on commercial mugshot sites, dismissed or dropped charges, arrests with no conviction, and sealed or expunged records
Case by caseCourt case pages on legal research sites, older misdemeanor convictions, records on sites that require extra verification, and inaccurate entries on screening reports that need supporting court documents
HardestRecent convictions that haven’t been expunged or sealed, official court and government websites, and widely covered cases in the news. For these, we often recommend search result suppression alongside removal.

How long does background check removal take?

Timing depends on the site and the type of record. Here’s what to expect:

StageTypical timing
People-search site opt-outsA few days to a few weeks, depending on each site’s process
Mugshot site removalsTypically 7–10 business days, including Google and Bing
Screening report disputes (FCRA)Up to 30 days for the screening company to investigate, or up to 45 days if more information is added
Google and Bing cleanupVaries; starts once the source page is removed

Most clients see their first removals within the first few weeks.

Why removal requests get denied, and what strengthens them

Common reasons requests fail

  • Only one profile was removed. Many sites create separate profiles for each name variation, age, and address. Miss one and your record stays up.
  • No supporting paperwork. A dismissal, expungement, or sealing order is often what turns a “no” into a “yes” on court record sites and screening disputes.
  • The wrong process. Some sites only accept requests through a specific form, email, or verification step, and ignore everything else.
  • No follow-up. Requests get lost. Without persistent follow-up, many never get processed.

What strengthens a request

  • Court documents showing the case was dismissed, expunged, sealed, or that you were found not guilty
  • A complete list of every URL, name variation, and address tied to you
  • Requests tailored to each site’s own policy and the state privacy laws that apply
  • For screening reports, a written FCRA dispute that cites the specific inaccurate or outdated entry

Will my record come back?

It can. Background check sites refresh their data from public records, data brokers, and each other, so a removed profile can reappear as a new listing.

Why records reappear

  • Data refreshes. Sites re-import court and arrest data on their own schedules.
  • New profiles. A new address, phone number, or name spelling can create a brand-new profile.
  • Copycat sites. Smaller sites scrape larger ones, so one listing can spread to several more.

How we keep it from coming back

  • Every copy, not just one. We remove duplicate profiles and name variations so there’s no leftover page for Google to surface.
  • Backed by the court record. If your case was dismissed, expunged, or sealed, we use that paperwork so the removal rests on the case’s actual status.
  • Monitoring. Our $49/month monitoring plan watches the major background check and data broker sites and removes new listings when they appear, with free re-removal if you’re re-listed. Cancel anytime.

Free re-removal. If a mugshot or court record we removed is re-posted on the same site, we remove it again at no additional cost. (News articles are not covered.)

Can you remove yourself from background check sites?

Yes. Most people-search sites have a free opt-out. Where people get stuck is the volume: there are dozens of sites, each with its own process, and they keep re-listing you.

How to remove yourself from a background check website

  1. Search your name on the site and copy the URL of every profile that’s yours.
  2. Find the site’s opt-out or privacy page (usually linked in the footer).
  3. Submit each profile URL and complete any email or phone verification.
  4. Repeat on every other people-search site, then check Google for leftover results.
  5. Re-check every few months, because many sites re-list you after a data refresh.

See our AdvancedBackgroundChecks opt-out guide for a step-by-step example.

Where DIY goes wrong

  • Removing one profile but missing the duplicates under other names, ages, or addresses
  • Giving sites more personal information than they had to begin with
  • Assuming the opt-out also removed the Google result
  • Not knowing the FCRA dispute process for employment and tenant screening reports

Background check removal FAQs

How do I remove my criminal record from a background check?

It depends on where it appears. On people-search sites, the record is removed through each site’s opt-out process, then cleared from Google and Bing. On employment or tenant screening reports, outdated, sealed, expunged, or inaccurate entries can be disputed with the screening company under the FCRA. The official court record only changes through expungement or sealing. We handle the online removals and disputes for you.

How do I remove myself from background check websites?

Find every profile with your name on each site, submit the site’s opt-out form with each profile URL, and complete any verification. Then repeat across the other people-search sites and remove the leftover Google results. We do all of this for you and keep watching for re-listings.

Why is my information on background check sites?

These sites collect public records such as court and arrest records, property records, and voter files, plus data bought from data brokers and marketing lists. They combine it into a profile and sell access to it.

Is background check removal legal?

Yes. Opting out of people-search sites, requesting removal of mugshots and court record pages, and disputing inaccurate screening reports are all legal. We use each site’s own policies, search engine removal tools, and the rights you have under federal and state law.

Can an arrest show up on a background check if I wasn’t convicted?

It can, but there are limits. Under the FCRA, screening companies generally can’t report arrests that didn’t lead to a conviction once they’re more than seven years old, except for jobs paying $75,000 or more. Some states are stricter. People-search sites may still list them, and those listings can usually be removed.

Can you remove a conviction from a background check?

We can usually remove conviction records from people-search sites, mugshot sites, and many court record sites. On formal screening reports, federal law doesn’t limit how long convictions can be reported, so expungement or sealing is often the path. Once a record is expunged or sealed, it shouldn’t be reported, and we can help dispute it if it is.

What if my record was expunged or sealed but still shows up?

That’s one of the strongest cases for removal. We use your expungement or sealing order to request removal from background check, mugshot, and court record sites, and to dispute the entry with any screening company still reporting it.

Can you change or delete the official court record?

No. We don’t alter official court records, and we’re not a law firm. Expungement and sealing are legal processes through the court. What we remove are the copies published online and the search results that point to them.

How long does background check removal take?

People-search opt-outs usually take a few days to a few weeks, depending on the site. Mugshot site removals typically take 7–10 business days, including Google and Bing. Screening companies generally have 30 days to investigate a dispute, or up to 45 days if more information is added.

How much does background check removal cost?

It depends on how many sites list you and what kind of records they show. After a free, confidential audit, you get a firm per-link quote before any work starts. Pay after removal and payment plans are available, and we accept all major credit cards and Zelle.

Do you guarantee background check removal?

Yes. Every removal we agree to is backed by a money-back guarantee: if we can’t remove a link we agreed to remove, you get your money back.

Will my information come back after it’s removed?

It can, because background check sites refresh their data and create new profiles. We remove every duplicate we find, use court paperwork where possible, and offer monitoring for $49/month. If a mugshot or court record we removed is re-posted on the same site, we remove it again for free.

Does removing a background check profile remove it from Google?

Not automatically. Google can keep showing the old title and snippet for weeks. We file removal requests with Google and Bing for every removed URL and confirm the results are gone.

Will employers still see my record?

Removing online profiles keeps the record out of name searches on Google. Formal employment background checks use separate screening companies, so if an outdated, sealed, or inaccurate record appears there, it needs to be disputed with that company. We can help with both.

Can AI tools like ChatGPT or Google AI show my arrest record?

They can if the record is published online, because AI search tools pull from the same websites. Removing the source pages and the search results is the most effective way to keep AI answers from repeating it.

Do I need a lawyer to remove a background check?

Not for most online removals. People-search opt-outs, mugshot removals, and search engine requests don’t require a lawyer. If you want a record expunged or sealed by the court, talk to a criminal defense attorney; once you have the order, we use it to strengthen your removal requests.

Is my information kept confidential?

Yes. Your audit and everything you share with us stays confidential. We only use your information to find and remove your records.
