Can you remove Google reviews?

Short answer: Yes, when a review breaks Google’s content policies or the law. Fake reviews, competitor and ex-employee reviews, spam, harassment, hate speech, personal information, and defamatory statements can all be removed. A review that is simply negative but honest usually can’t be. Removal happens by reporting the specific policy violation, appealing Google’s decision with evidence, or filing a legal removal request backed by a partner attorney or court order.

Defamation Defenders has spent more than ten years removing false and damaging content for over 4,000 individuals and businesses. We prepare and submit every report, appeal, and legal request on your behalf, so you don’t have to learn Google’s policy language or chase support tickets.

Which Google reviews can be removed?

Google removes reviews that violate its prohibited and restricted content policies. Being unfair or one-star isn’t enough on its own. Here’s how the most common situations are judged:

Review typeRemovable?Why
Fake reviews and review attacksUsuallyFake engagement is prohibited, including reviews from people who were never customers and coordinated bursts of one-star ratings
Competitor reviewsUsuallyA conflict of interest: reviewing a competitor to hurt it is against policy
Current or former employee reviewsUsuallyAlso a conflict of interest; employer reviews belong on sites like Glassdoor
Harassment, threats, or hate speechYesProhibited content, including reviews that target employees by name
Personal informationYesPhone numbers, addresses, and other private details aren’t allowed
Off-topic or wrong businessUsuallyReviews must describe a real experience with that location
Defamatory statementsOftenFalse statements of fact can be removed through a legal request, especially with a court order
Honest negative experiencesRarelyOpinions about a real experience are protected by Google’s policies and the law
Star-only ratings (no text)RarelyHard to remove unless they’re part of a fake-review pattern

Types of Google reviews we remove

We handle every kind of policy-violating review on Google Business Profiles and Google Maps, for single locations and multi-location brands.

Fake reviews and review bombing

Coordinated one-star attacks, bot accounts, and reviews from people who never did business with you.

Competitor reviews

Reviews posted by rival businesses or people acting for them, documented as a conflict of interest.

Former employee reviews

Reviews from current or former staff posted as customer reviews. For employer reviews, see Glassdoor review removal and Indeed review removal.

Defamatory reviews

False statements of fact about you or your business. See our online defamation removal service.

Harassment and personal attacks

Reviews that name employees, share personal information, or use threats and hate speech.

Extortion reviews

Reviews posted to pressure you into a refund or payment, a scam Google tells businesses to report separately.

Reviews on other platforms? We also handle Yelp, Trustpilot, Facebook, BBB, and more on our review removal services page.

Why negative Google reviews do so much damage

They sit beside your name in Search and Maps

Your star rating and newest reviews appear in the local pack, on Google Maps, and in your Business Profile panel, often before anyone visits your website.

They feed AI answers

AI Overviews and AI assistants summarize reviews when people ask which business to choose. A cluster of fake or defamatory reviews can shape that summary. Our AI reputation management work covers this side.

They affect rankings and conversions

Review count, rating, and recency are part of how Google ranks local businesses, and customers filter by rating. One fake review attack can cost calls, bookings, and walk-ins for months.

How to remove Google reviews: the methods that work

Every review gets the method that fits its violation. Most cases use more than one.

1. Policy reports with evidence

We report the review under the exact policy it breaks, not the closest-sounding option, with the evidence Google needs: customer records showing the reviewer was never a client, timing patterns in a review attack, or links tying the reviewer to a competitor or former employee.

2. Appeals in the Reviews Management Tool

If Google’s first decision is “no policy violation,” each review gets one appeal. Appeals can cover up to 10 reviews at once, which matters during a review attack. We write the appeal around facts and documentation, because that’s what reverses decisions.

3. Legal removal requests

Some reviews don’t break a content policy but do break the law, such as false statements of fact. Our partner attorneys can prepare a legal removal request or, when needed, help obtain a court order that Google will act on.

4. Reviewer outreach, done the legal way

Sometimes a reviewer will edit or remove a review once a real problem is fixed. We never offer payment or make threats for a review: the FTC’s rule on fake reviews prohibits review suppression through intimidation, and it can backfire.

How long does Google review removal take?

Most removals resolve within a few days to a few weeks. Timing depends on the route:

RouteTypical range
Policy report (clear violation)A few days
Appeal after a first decisionSeveral days to a few weeks
Review attack (multiple reviews)One to a few weeks, depending on volume
Legal removal requestA few weeks or longer
Court orderDepends on the court; we’ll give you a case-specific estimate

Typical ranges, not guarantees. Google doesn’t publish response times for appeals or legal requests.

Why Google refuses to remove some reviews

Google leaves a review up when it reads as a genuine opinion about a real experience, when the report names the wrong policy, or when there’s no evidence behind a claim like “this person was never a customer.” Automated checks also miss context, such as slang, regional wording, or industry terms.

What strengthens a request:

  • Naming the specific policy and quoting the words that break it
  • Customer records showing no transaction with the reviewer
  • Dates and patterns that show a coordinated attack
  • Proof of a conflict of interest, like a reviewer’s ties to a competitor
  • A court order or attorney letter for defamatory statements

How to remove a Google review yourself

You can report and appeal reviews for free. Here’s the process:

  • Report it from your Business Profile. Open your profile, select Read reviews, choose the review, and report it with the reason that matches the violation.
  • Track it in the Reviews Management Tool. Each report shows as Decision pending, Report reviewed: no policy violation, or Escalated.
  • Appeal once. If Google finds no violation, submit an appeal with evidence. You can include up to 10 reviews in one appeal.
  • Reply publicly. A calm, factual response helps future customers whether or not the review comes down.
  • Consider a legal request for false statements of fact.

Can you sue over a fake or defamatory Google review?

Sometimes. You generally can’t sue Google for a review someone else wrote, because Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act protects platforms. You may be able to sue the reviewer if the review contains false statements of fact that harmed your business, and a court order that a review is defamatory is one of the strongest grounds for getting Google to remove it.

Lawsuits are slow and expensive, and an anonymous reviewer may need to be identified first. Most of our clients never need one: policy reports and appeals resolve the majority of cases. When a legal route makes sense, we work with partner attorneys. Read more about removing defamatory content.

Defamation Defenders is not a law firm, and this isn’t legal advice.

Will a removed Google review come back?

Usually not, but a determined reviewer can post again from the same or a new account. We watch for that during your project.

Our repost policy: if the same reviewer reposts within 30 days, we handle it at no extra cost. Your written quote states exactly what is covered.

For ongoing protection, reputation monitoring alerts you to new reviews and mentions as they appear.

Google review removal FAQs

Can you remove Google reviews?

Yes, when a review breaks Google’s content policies or the law. Fake reviews, competitor and employee reviews, spam, harassment, personal information, and defamatory statements can be removed. Honest negative reviews usually can’t.

How do I remove a Google review?

Report it from your Google Business Profile under the specific policy it breaks, track it in the Reviews Management Tool, and appeal with evidence if Google finds no violation. For false statements of fact, a legal removal request may work.

How do I get a fake Google review removed?

Report it as fake engagement and back it up with evidence, such as customer records showing no transaction with the reviewer or a pattern of reviews posted at the same time. Appeals can include up to 10 reviews at once during a review attack.

Can a business delete Google reviews?

No. A business can’t delete reviews from its own profile. It can report reviews that break Google’s policies, reply publicly, and file a legal request for unlawful content.

How long does it take to remove a Google review?

Most removals resolve within a few days to a few weeks. A clear policy violation can be decided in days, while appeals and legal requests take longer.

How much does Google review removal cost?

Pricing depends on the number of reviews and the route needed. You get a firm, written per-review quote after a free review, and pay after removal is available on eligible cases.

What if Google won’t remove the review?

We appeal with stronger evidence, consider a legal request where the review is false or unlawful, and help you respond publicly. If we can’t complete a removal we agreed to, you get your money back.

Can you remove a negative Google review that is honest?

Usually not. Google protects genuine opinions about real experiences. A professional public reply and more genuine reviews are the better tools there.

Can you remove a Google review left by a former employee?

Usually, yes. Reviews from current or former employees are a conflict of interest under Google’s policies when they’re posted as customer reviews.

Can you remove a Google review from a competitor?

Usually, yes, when there’s evidence linking the reviewer to a competing business. Competitor reviews are a conflict of interest.

Can you remove a star-only Google review?

It’s difficult. Star-only ratings with no text rarely break a policy unless they’re part of a fake-review attack.

Will a removed Google review come back?

Usually not. If the same reviewer reposts within 30 days, we handle it at no extra cost. Your written quote states exactly what is covered.

Is Google review removal legal?

Yes, when it’s done by reporting policy violations or through legal requests. Paying for or threatening reviewers to remove reviews is not something we do, and the FTC’s rule on fake reviews prohibits review suppression through intimidation.

Can you remove a Google review without the reviewer knowing?

Google doesn’t notify reviewers about who reported a review. If a review is removed for a policy violation, the reviewer may simply see that it’s no longer public.

Do you remove reviews on Google Maps?

Yes. Google Maps and Google Business Profile share the same reviews, so a removed review disappears from both, as well as from Google Search.

Does the free review commit me to anything?

No. We review your links, tell you which reviews qualify, and give you a written quote. You decide whether to go ahead.
