Can you remove a Yelp review?

Yes, if it breaks Yelp’s Content Guidelines. Yelp says it will remove a review it believes violates those guidelines, and it asks business owners to report questionable reviews. Reporting alone does not guarantee removal. Yelp allows a wide range of opinions, so a report has to show which rule the review breaks.

Key facts about Yelp review removal

  • Yelp removes reviews for three main reasons: conflict of interest, no first-hand customer experience, and inappropriate content.
  • For conflict-of-interest reports, Yelp says suspicion usually isn’t enough. You need specific evidence.
  • Moderators may take several days to decide, and Yelp emails the result.
  • Yelp notifies the reviewer if their review is removed.
  • Advertising on Yelp has no effect on how your reviews are treated.

What Yelp will and won’t remove

What Yelp will and will not remove under its content guidelines

These are the grounds from Yelp’s own guidance, When should I report a review?

1. The reviewer has a conflict of interest

Yelp removes reviews from competitors, current or former employees, people affiliated with the business, friends and family of the owner, and anyone paid or given an incentive to write the review. This applies even if the person insists they were a real customer. Yelp needs clear evidence of the connection.

2. The review isn’t about the reviewer’s own experience

Yelp removes reviews based on someone else’s experience, on something the reviewer heard from a friend or saw on the news, reviews that mainly argue with another reviewer, reviews posted to the wrong business, and reviews copied from another source. Reviews that only talk about a business’s hours, offerings, or policies can also be removed.

3. The review contains inappropriate material

Yelp removes threats, hate speech, and lewd comments. It also removes private information about employees or customers, such as a bartender’s full name or address. Full names of professionals such as doctors, lawyers, and realtors are generally allowed.

What Yelp won’t remove

Honest negative opinions from real customers, colorful language, occasional profanity, and reviews a business simply disagrees with. Yelp does not settle factual disputes between a business and a customer.

Why a fake Yelp review hurts

Lost customers

People check Yelp before they book or walk in. A fake one-star review can send them elsewhere.

Lower star rating

Recommended reviews count toward your rating. One fake review can pull the average down for a small business.

Google search

Your Yelp page often ranks on Google for your business name, so the review follows you there.

AI answers

AI tools summarize review sites when people ask about your business, including the fake reviews.

How to report a Yelp review yourself

You can report a review yourself at no cost, following Yelp’s reporting instructions:

  • Claim your business page on Yelp for Business (biz.yelp.com).
  • Go to the Reviews section and find the review.
  • Click the three-dot More Options button and choose Report Review. In the Yelp for Business app, tap the three dots and tap Report Review.
  • Pick the reason that matches the rule the review breaks, and include specific evidence.
  • Check the flag icon next to the review for the status, and watch your email for Yelp’s decision.

Where do-it-yourself reports go wrong

Most denied reports say a review is unfair or untrue without showing which rule it breaks. Reports that claim a competitor or ex-employee wrote the review without proof are usually denied, because Yelp needs clear evidence. Offering the reviewer a refund or discount to delete the review breaks Yelp’s rules and can backfire.

If a Yelp review can’t be removed

We tell you before you pay anything. A calm, factual public response shows future customers how you handle problems. Asking every customer for honest feedback, without filtering out unhappy ones, builds a stronger base of genuine reviews over time. If the Yelp page ranks for your name on Google, search result suppression can help.

What we never do: write fake reviews, pay reviewers, threaten customers, or offer incentives to delete reviews. The FTC’s rule on consumer reviews bans fake reviews and the suppression of honest reviews through intimidation, and Yelp penalizes businesses that try to game their reviews.

Pay after removal. Money back if we can’t remove it.

You get a firm quote before any work starts. Pay after removal is available, and if we agree to remove a Yelp review and can’t complete it, you get your money back. Payment plans available. We accept all major cards and Zelle.

Yelp review removal FAQs

Can you remove a Yelp review?

Yes, when the review breaks Yelp’s Content Guidelines. Yelp removes reviews for three main reasons: the reviewer has a conflict of interest, the review is not about the reviewer’s own experience as a customer, or the review contains inappropriate material such as threats, hate speech, lewd comments, or private information. Yelp does not remove reviews just because a business disagrees with them.

How do I report a review on Yelp?

Log in to your Yelp for Business account (biz.yelp.com), find the review in the Reviews section, click the three-dot More Options button, and choose Report Review. In the Yelp for Business app, tap the three dots on the review and tap Report Review. You may need to claim your business page first.

How long does Yelp take to review a report?

Yelp says its moderators may take several days to evaluate a reported review. You can hover over the flag icon next to the review to check the status, and Yelp emails its decision to the address on your account.

Will the reviewer know their review was removed?

Yes. Yelp says it notifies the reviewer if their content is removed.

Can I remove a Yelp review from a competitor or former employee?

Yes, this is one of the strongest grounds. Yelp removes reviews from competitors, current or former employees, and friends or family of the business owner, even if they say they were a real customer. Yelp says suspicion alone usually is not enough, so the report needs specific evidence of the connection.

What does “not recommended” mean on Yelp?

Yelp’s automated recommendation software decides which reviews to feature. Not-recommended reviews are still viewable through a link at the bottom of your page, but they do not count toward your star rating or review count. Yelp says no employee can override the software’s decisions.

Can I pay Yelp or advertise to remove bad reviews?

No. Yelp says advertising has no connection to how a business’s reviews are treated. The only way to remove a review is for it to break Yelp’s Content Guidelines.

Will Yelp remove a review that is factually wrong?

Not usually on its own. Yelp allows a wide range of opinions and does not referee factual disputes between a business and a customer. A false statement of fact that is clearly tied to a rule, such as describing someone else’s experience or a different business, has a better chance.

Will Yelp follow a court order to remove a review?

Not always. Yelp may not be bound by a court order in a lawsuit it was not part of. A court finding that a review is defamatory can still support a removal request, but it does not guarantee one.

How much does Yelp review removal cost?

We give you a firm quote after a free, confidential review of the reviews you want removed. Pay after removal and payment plans are available, and if we agree to remove a review and cannot complete it, you get your money back.

Can I respond to a Yelp review instead?

Yes. Business owners can post a public response or send a private message. A calm, factual public response helps when a review cannot be removed. Never offer the reviewer anything in exchange for changing or deleting a review, since that breaks Yelp’s rules.

Can I remove my business from Yelp entirely?

Generally no. Yelp does not remove business pages at the owner’s request, because the page belongs to the public record of customer reviews. You can claim the page to manage it and respond to reviews.

Is reporting Yelp reviews legal?

Yes. Reporting through Yelp’s own process is exactly what Yelp asks business owners to do. What is not allowed is posting fake reviews, paying for reviews, or threatening reviewers. The FTC’s rule on consumer reviews prohibits both fake reviews and suppressing honest reviews through intimidation.

Do Yelp reviews show up in Google and AI answers?

Yes. Yelp pages often rank on Google for a business’s name, and AI tools such as Google AI Overviews and ChatGPT draw on review sites when they describe a business. A removed review stops feeding those answers.
