Can you remove a Tripadvisor review?

Yes, when it breaks Tripadvisor’s review guidelines. Tripadvisor requires reviews to be first-hand, submitted within one year of the experience, relevant, and written by someone with no connection to the business. Reviews that fail those tests can be reported and removed.

Owners can’t delete reviews themselves, and Tripadvisor won’t remove a genuine guest’s honest opinion. The requests that work are the ones that match a review to a specific guideline and back it up.

Tripadvisor ruleWhat it means
First-hand onlyThe reviewer must have actually stayed, eaten, or booked. Secondhand stories and reviews based only on a phone call don’t qualify.
Within one yearReviews must be submitted within one year of the experience.
No affiliationEmployees, former employees, relatives, suppliers, and similar businesses within 10 miles can’t review.
One review per visitA reviewer gets one review per listing per visit.
No blackmailThreatening a bad review to get something of value is treated as blackmail.

What Tripadvisor will and won’t remove

These grounds come from Tripadvisor’s review guidelines.

1. Conflict of interest

Tripadvisor says anyone affiliated with a property may not review it, including current and former employees, relatives and friends of staff or owners, suppliers, and owners or employees of similar businesses in the same town or within 10 miles.

2. Not a first-hand experience

Reviews based on what someone heard, read online, or saw from outside the property, and complaints only about posted policies or opening hours.

3. Too old, or reviewed too often

Reviews posted more than a year after the experience, or more than one review for the same visit.

4. Off-topic content

Political, religious, or ethical rants unrelated to the experience, and commentary about other reviews, the owner, or Tripadvisor itself.

5. Review vandalism and blackmail

Coordinated attacks, competitor sabotage, and reviews threatened in exchange for a refund, upgrade, or free meal.

What Tripadvisor keeps: a real guest’s honest, first-hand review. If that’s what you’re dealing with, we’ll tell you during the free assessment and help with responses instead.

Blackmail reviews: report before they post

If a guest threatens a bad review unless you give them a refund, upgrade, or free service, Tripadvisor treats it as blackmail. Report the threat to Tripadvisor right away, before the review is posted, and save the message, the booking, and staff notes.

A guest who simply says they plan to write a review after a bad experience is not blackmailing you. The difference matters, and we help you document it.

How to report a Tripadvisor review yourself

  • Log in to the Tripadvisor Management Center.
  • Find the review and choose the option to report it.
  • Pick the reason that matches the guideline it breaks and explain briefly with evidence.
  • Report fraud, review exchanges, or fake “secret shopper” claims to contentintegrity@tripadvisor.com.
  • Respond publicly while you wait, calmly and without accusing the reviewer of fraud. Tripadvisor’s response rules don’t allow fraud accusations in management responses.

Pay after removal. Money back if we can’t remove it.

You get a firm quote before any work starts. On pay-after-removal cases there is no upfront fee: you pay once the Tripadvisor review is confirmed gone. If we agree to remove a review and can’t, you don’t pay for it, or you get your money back. If the same reviewer reposts the same complaint within 30 days, we handle it at no extra charge.

Payment plans available. We accept all major cards and Zelle.

Tripadvisor review removal FAQs

Can you remove a Tripadvisor review?

Yes, if it breaks Tripadvisor’s guidelines, for example a review from a competitor or former employee, a review that isn’t first-hand, one posted more than a year after the experience, or a blackmail review.

Can a business owner delete a Tripadvisor review?

No. Only Tripadvisor or the reviewer can remove it. Owners can report reviews that break the guidelines.

How long does Tripadvisor take to review a report?

Usually several days. Most removals we take on resolve within 2 to 6 weeks, including follow-up.

Can competitors review my business?

No. Tripadvisor bars owners and employees of similar businesses in the same municipality or within 10 miles from reviewing.

What counts as a blackmail review?

A guest threatening a bad review to get something of value, like a refund or upgrade. Report it to Tripadvisor before it posts.

How much does Tripadvisor review removal cost?

It depends on the number of reviews and the evidence. You get a free assessment and a firm quote first. Pay after removal and payment plans are available.

Do I pay if it isn’t removed?

No. On pay-after-removal cases there’s no upfront fee. On prepaid cases, if we agree to remove a review and can’t, you get your money back.

Can I offer a guest a refund to delete a review?

No. Tripadvisor prohibits incentives for review removal, and the FTC’s rule on consumer reviews bans suppressing honest reviews with incentives.

Will removing a review fix my ranking?

Removed reviews no longer count toward your rating and ranking. Recent, positive, genuine reviews matter too, and we can help with that.

What if the reviewer posts again?

If the same reviewer reposts the same complaint within 30 days of a removal we handled, we deal with it at no extra charge.

Do you remove reviews from Google, Booking.com, Expedia, and Yelp too?

Yes. We quote all platforms together.

Are you a law firm?

No. Defamation Defenders is a reputation management company. When a case needs legal action, we work with partner attorneys.
