Can you remove an Avvo review?
Yes, when the review breaks Avvo’s Community Guidelines. Avvo says reviews should come only from people who hired the lawyer or had a consultation with them, and only about their own lawyer. Reviews of opposing counsel, or of a lawyer who represented someone else, aren’t supposed to be posted. Avvo also says reviews accusing an attorney of criminal activity will not be posted.
Avvo states that it does not verify or investigate reviews and does not take sides in factual disputes. So an Avvo review rarely comes down because it is inaccurate. It comes down because the reviewer wasn’t a client, the content is prohibited, or the review is fake. That is what our requests focus on.
| Key fact | What it means for you |
|---|---|
| Who can review | A client, or someone who had a consultation, reviewing their own lawyer. |
| Opposing parties | Reviews of opposing counsel aren’t allowed, a common reason Avvo reviews come down. |
| Payors | A non-client who paid may review only when their interests align with the client, such as a parent paying for a minor. |
| Neutral roles | Reviews aren’t allowed where interests diverge or the lawyer acted as a neutral, for example in mediation, arbitration, probate, or guardianship matters. |
| Fact disputes | Avvo won’t decide who is right about what happened in a case. |
What Avvo will and won’t remove
These grounds come from Avvo’s Community Guidelines.
1. The reviewer was never your client
Opposing parties, their family members, people who only read about a case, and anyone with secondhand information. This is the strongest ground for most attorneys we help.
2. The review is about a case where your role was neutral or adverse
Mediators, arbitrators, guardians ad litem, and lawyers in probate or guardianship matters often get reviews from people whose interests were opposed to the outcome.
3. Accusations of criminal activity
Avvo says reviews that accuse an attorney of a crime won’t be posted. It points reviewers to the authorities instead.
4. Personal information
Home addresses, phone numbers, and account details.
5. Fake, duplicate, and coordinated reviews
Multiple reviews from one person, reviews from a competitor, or a burst of reviews tied to one dispute.

Free assessment
Send us your Avvo profile and the reviews you’re concerned about. We check each one against Avvo’s guidelines.
Firm quote
A flat, per-review quote before work starts. Pay after removal and payment plans available.
Evidence
We show the reviewer wasn’t a client, or that the content is prohibited, using information that doesn’t breach confidentiality.
Filing and follow-up
We prepare and submit the reports, follow up with Avvo, and resubmit with more evidence when a first request is denied.
Confirmation
We confirm the review is gone from Avvo and from Google’s cached copy.
How long Avvo review removal takes
Most Avvo removals we take on resolve within 2 to 6 weeks. Avvo doesn’t publish a review time, so timing depends on the strength of the evidence and whether a second submission is needed.
| Stage | Typical timing |
|---|---|
| Free assessment | 1–2 business days |
| First submission | Within a week of approval |
| Avvo decision | Usually 2–6 weeks |
| Resubmission if needed | Adds 1–3 weeks |
Responding to an Avvo review: the ethics problem
Lawyers have to be careful replying to bad reviews. The ABA’s Formal Opinion 496 says a lawyer generally may not reveal client information to respond to online criticism, even when the review is unfair, and several lawyers have been disciplined for doing it.
A safe public response is short and general: you take client concerns seriously, you can’t discuss any matter publicly, and you invite the person to contact the office. Our removal requests are built so nothing confidential is posted publicly.
How to report an Avvo review yourself
- Log in to your Avvo profile and find the review.
- Use the report option and pick the reason that matches the guideline it breaks.
- Explain briefly and factually why, for example that the reviewer was the opposing party, without disclosing client information.
- Keep screenshots, and resubmit with clearer evidence if the first report is denied.
Pay after removal. Money back if we can’t remove it.
You get a firm quote before any work starts. On pay-after-removal cases there is no upfront fee: you pay once the Avvo review is confirmed gone. If we agree to remove a review and can’t, you don’t pay for it, or you get your money back. If the same reviewer reposts the same complaint within 30 days, we handle it at no extra charge.
Payment plans available. We accept all major cards and Zelle.

Avvo review removal FAQs
Can you remove an Avvo review?
Yes, when it breaks Avvo’s Community Guidelines, for example a review from someone who was never your client, a review of opposing counsel, an accusation of criminal activity, posted personal information, or a fake review.
Will Avvo remove a review from the opposing party?
Avvo’s guidelines say reviewers should only review their own attorney, and reviews of opposing counsel won’t be posted. That is one of the most common grounds for removal.
Does Avvo verify reviews?
Avvo says it does not verify or investigate reviews and does not take sides in factual disputes. That’s why removal requests need to focus on guideline violations, not on who is right.
How much does Avvo review removal cost?
It depends on the number of reviews and the evidence. You get a free assessment and a firm quote first. Pay after removal and payment plans are available.
Do I pay if it isn’t removed?
No. On pay-after-removal cases there’s no upfront fee. On prepaid cases, if we agree to remove a review and can’t, you get your money back.
How long does it take?
Most Avvo removals we take on resolve within 2 to 6 weeks.
Can I respond to a bad Avvo review?
Yes, but keep it general. ABA Formal Opinion 496 says lawyers generally can’t reveal client information to defend themselves against online criticism.
Can I delete my Avvo profile instead?
Avvo builds profiles from public bar records, so claiming and managing the profile is usually better than trying to remove it.
What if the reviewer posts again?
If the same reviewer reposts the same complaint within 30 days of a removal we handled, we deal with it at no extra charge.
Do you remove attorney reviews on Google, Yelp, and Lawyers.com too?
Yes. We quote all the platforms together.
Is this confidential?
Yes. We never contact the reviewer or post anything without your approval.
Are you a law firm?
No. Defamation Defenders is a reputation management company. When a case needs a legal letter or court order, we work with partner attorneys.
